Program Description:

Our Family Coalition (OFC) advances equity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) families with children through support, education and advocacy.

Primary Issues that the Program Addresses:

OFC offers family support programs serving LGBTQ parents/caregivers and their children, by providing educational workshops, parent peer support groups, and community-building events and activities; helps foster institutional change focused on building cultural competency for working with LGBTQ families in elementary schools, early childhood settings, and health & social service providers; and engages in policy & advocacy work to advance the equality of LGBTQ families. These three areas of work inform and build on one another.

Populations and Clientele Served:

LGBTQ-headed families with children and prospective parents throughout the Bay Area. Throughout all our programs, we focus resources on deepening our work with families and the communities in which they live.

Types of Services Offered by the Program:

Training educators and parents on creating and maintaining Welcoming & Inclusive Schools for all families. Trainings vary from one time to monthly, are primarily at elementary schools (currently in 3 middle schools as pilot project), and are all over Bay Area.

Intern Assignments and Learning Opportunities:

Assisting with planning, developing and implementing all services. This includes developing new curriculum for trainings, maintaining statewide Fair, Accurate, Inclusive, Representative (FAIR) Education website, helping with statewide implementation of new CA social science K-12 framework, attending workshops and collaborative meetings. Interns are also encouraged to learn about all other agency departments (Policy, Family Programs, Development, Operations), by attending at least one event led by each team, including a Board Meeting.
