Program Description:

Parent Services Project is a national nonprofit founded in 1980.  Our mission is to engage and strengthen families, working in partnership with educators and service providers to take leadership in assuring the well-being of all children, families, and communities.  Our programs include:

•           Vision and Voice: Parent Leadership Institute - which is a series of workshops to empower parents and increase families’ engagement in their children’s education and the community at large.

•           Raising A Reader is a take home book bag program housed in early childhood programs, that encourages parents to support early literacy by sharing multicultural age-appropriate books with their children.

•           Mentores Project is a Canal-based outreach program that reaches underserved families and links them to resources, other families and community networks, and promotes their involvement in civic engagement opportunities.

Clientele Served:

Low-income families; immigrant families; parents with children in early childhood programs, preschools, K-12 schools

Issues Program Addresses:

Family engagement in children's education; parent leadership development; family strengthening/family support services; community organizing

Intern Assignments:

- Vision & Voice - intern can do parent outreach, support/learn training techniques, support program evaluation efforts, develop case studies/video stories

- Raising A Reader - intern can lead storytimes at local preschools; help with ordering materials, support program evaluation efforts, lead parent workshops on early literacy, support promotores to reach spanish speaking day care providers

- Mentores Project - intern can get experience working with individual families helping them to identify and access resources; can support outreach efforts for community events; can be involved in community organizing efforts; can support program evaluation efforts; can identify community resources and update status

Intern Training & Educational Opportunities: Agency orientation; training in our parent engagement and leadership curriculum; training in our Raising A Reader curriculum; opportunities to lead parent training with support and feedback; opportunities to attend professional development seminars with program staff - focused on working with families in educational or community-based settings.

Intern Benefits: (Include stipend, conferences, car, food, etc.)mileage reimbursement for intern-specific work assignments that require driving; some opportunities to attend conferences
