The Mission of the Rainbow Community Center is to build community and promote wellness among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Two-Spirit, Intersex and Asexual (LGBT) people and our allies in Contra Costa County.

Primary Issues that the Program Addresses:
1. Mental health disparities among LGBT and HIV/AIDS (Poz) people that result from isolation, shame, stigma, discrimination, and other concerns.
2. Safety & Security concerns – including social, emotional, spiritual, and physical (food, health, violence, etc)
3. Social networks and support – increase casual networks of support as well as deep relationships.
4. Advocacy – organizing to improve the conditions facing our participants.

Populations and Clientele Served:
LGBT people and people living with HIV/AIDS (Poz) of all ages and other identities. Work with other populations may be available depending on intern interest.

Types of Services Offered by the Program:
Case management, counseling, support groups, HIV/AIDS testing and education, food assistance, outreach, collaboration with other agencies, trainings on LGBT issues.

Intern Assignments and Learning Opportunities:
MSW interns will have the opportunity to:
1. Provide case management services using Medi-Cal standards of documentation.
2. Conduct program intakes; provide assessments, wellness plans, and progress notes.
3. Provide home-based assessments and wellness checks.
4. Facilitate support groups.
5. Participate in weekly group supervision, in addition to weekly 1:1 supervision.
6. Work as part of a team with RCC staff, MFT and MDiv interns.

Social Work interns will learn and practice:
1. Assessment of conditions and risk & resilience factors related to isolation.
a. Social support, transportation, housing, family connections, identity development and other risk factors.
2. Assessment of conditions and risk & resilience factors related to stigma.
a. Homophobic, transphobic, heterosexist social structures and other forms of rejection.
3. Assessment of conditions and risk & resilience factors related to shame.
a. Internalized homophobia and gender messages.
b. Intersecting factors like class, race/ethnicity, age, etc.

Interventions including the following:
1. Craft specific interventions to provide support to our participants – e.g. build rapport, conduct assessments, identify goals, empower participant to change conditions/build connections, etc.
2. Build and maintain social support systems among program participants.
3. Monitor program participants’ health and mental health status.
4. Educate participants about impacts of isolation, shame, and stigma and help them address these issues on a community or group level.
5. Assess eligibility and provide resource referrals.

MSW students who provide school-based services will be required to be fingerprinted through the school district. The Rainbow Community Center will reimburse this fee, as well as any cost for TB testing that is incurred by the intern.
