Program Description:
The Ravenswood City School District (RCSD) in San Mateo County is a unique academic environment that draws from the culturally rich communities of East Palo Alto and eastern Menlo Park. The ethnic make-up of the population is predominantly Hispanic (79%), African American (10%), Pacific Islander (9%) and other (2%). RCSD serves some 4,200 students in kindergarten through eighth grades in eight elementary schools, and a child development center.
Clientele Served:
Students range in age from 2.9 to 16 years old. More than 95% of our students qualify for the Free and Reduced Lunch program. In 2010, the median household income in East Palo Alto was $44,006 compared to $150,700 in neighboring communities. Sixty-nine percent of Ravenswood District’s elementary and middle school student populations are English Language Learners (ELL). Fifty-one percent of parents did not complete high school. Ninety-six percent did not complete college. More than five percent of our students are homeless. Almost one percent of our students are currently involved in the foster care system.
Issues Program Addresses:
Ravenswood schools are significantly underperforming compared to its wealthier neighbors, as measured by the state's Academic Performance Index (API). Whereas Menlo Park Elementary District and Palo Alto Unified have API scores exceeding 900, Ravenswood has an average API of 715. Fifty-one percent of parents did not complete high school. Ninety-six percent did not complete college. Sixty-nine percent of RCSD’s elementary and middle school student populations are English Language Learners (ELL). Additionally, RCSD is a fully inclusive school district. Students with special needs receive services in an integrated system.
Intern Assignments: Social Work assignments include: Case management, referral to community resources, referral to physical and mental health services, assist in coordinating Student Success Teams and 504 plans, assist in the implementation of interventions, supports and modifications for tier two and three students, assist in the development of behavior support plans (includes data collection and analysis), assist in developing psycho-educational and informational resources for parents, students, teachers, and community members, participate in kindergarten transition initiative, participate in community mental health advisory groups, participate in Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support systems (includes data collection and analysis), assist in bullying prevention, assist/facilitate small social skills groups with students based on District wide curriculum, and other duties as they arise.
Intern Training & Educational Opportunities: Mandated Reporter. Youth Mental Health First Aid, PBIS, Anti-bullying, Student Success Teams and 504’s, 2nd Step, KidPower, Functional Behavior Assessment, Behavior Intervention Case Management, Creating a positive school climate, school safety plans and procedures, student data and assessment, response to intervention, and/ or other opportunities as they arise.
