Program Description:
Laguna Honda Hospital’s Substance Abuse Treatment Services (SATS) team specializes in providing Harm Reduction substance abuse treatment, and referral services, within the San Francisco Department of Public Health (DPH) to elderly and younger residents in Rehabilitation and Long Term Care who also have medical issues related to aging, physical disability and trauma, cognitive impairment, and psychiatric disorders.

Clientele Served:
SATS provides services to a diverse multi-diagnosed population, the vast majority of who come from San Francisco’s homeless community.  Many of our patients are diagnosed with (but not limited to) HIV/AIDS, cognitive impairments, various psychiatric illnesses, catastrophic illness, and traumatic injuries.

Issues Program Addresses:
SATS addresses the following (but not limited to) issues: polysubstance abusing patients; multi and dual diagnosed patients; mental health issues (including personality disorders); problem behaviors; HIV/AIDS; death and dying; and coordinating care in a large social system.

Intern Assignments:
SATS Social Work Interns will prepare for and facilitate one to two groups per week; conduct substance abuse and mental status assessments including mental health diagnosis; conduct individual one-on-one psychotherapy and substance abuse discharge planning.  Social Work Interns will also be assigned an ongoing caseload and will be trained as an inter-disciplinary medical team member.

Intern Training & Educational Opportunities:
SATS Social Work Interns participate in Laguna Honda Hospital, and SFDPH, inservices, seminars and trainings as well as ongoing SATS trainings.  SATS Social Work Interns are also encouraged to participate in outside seminars and trainings, per supervisor’s discretion.
