Program Description:
The Filipino American Counseling and Treatment Team (FACT) is a specialty team that provides a family centered approach to the treatment of mentally ill Filipino clients between the ages of 18 and 65. The team provides assessment, psychiatric medication, individual, group, and family therapy, crisis intervention and urgent care, clinical case management, and information and referral. Language capacity of staff includes Tagalog and Filipino dialects of Bicol, Visayan, Ilocano, and Pampango.
Clientele Served:
The FACT team serves mentally ill low income Filipinos between the ages of 18 and 65. Our clientele includes immigrants, refugees, gays and lesbians, substance abusers, homeless individuals, and individuals with HIV or AIDS. Predominate diagnoses include schizophrenia, schizoaffective, bipolar, major depression, dual diagnoses, and borderline personality. Interns also provide psychotherapy to higher functioning clients with such diagnoses as adjustment disorder, dysthymia, or anxiety disorders.
Issues Program Addresses:
The program addresses the mental health needs of the Filipino community. There is commitment to provide high quality, cost-effective, culturally competent mental health services, especially for the poor and others with inadequate access to services, and with priority to those in greatest need.
Intern Assignments:
General and clinical interns with the FACT team receive training and experience with intake evaluation and assessment, individual, group, and family therapy, crisis intervention, clinical case management, and the delivery of services in the community.

Intern Training & Educational Opportunities:
Students may participate in weekly staff and clinical meetings. During the fall semester, there is a weekly didactic seminar (1 ½ hours) for interns. For the remainder of the year, there is either a didactic presentation or a case conference (1 ½ hours) every week. Approximately once a month, Community Mental Health sponsors full day training conferences which interns may attend free of charge.
Intern Benefits: (Include stipend, conferences, car, food, etc.
Interns are reimbursed for mileage if they use their own car for approved services to clients. Interns may apply for a stipend that ranges from $1,700 to $3,000. The stipend program is designed to encourage ethnic and cultural diversity and/or to assist students with demonstrated skills with culturally diverse populations.
