Program Description: Adult Protective Services is a state mandated program that investigates allegations and attempts to reduce risk of abuse and neglect of elders and dependent adults.

Clientele Served:Aged 65+ and over or dependent adults with disabilities 18-64 years of age.

Issues Program Addresses: Physical, sexual and financial and emotional abuse, self-neglect and neglect by others.  The interns will learn to address issues of aging, developmental disability, mental health, medically high risk, and homeless issues.  Students will face issues regarding how to keep a client in the least restrictive environment in the community as well as helping clients deal with institutionalization. He/she will interact and collaborate with community providers such as law enforcement, District Attorney's office, community base organizations, and medical professionals.

Intern Assignments: The intern will be assigned to his designated field instructor’s unit.  Caseload of the intern will be determined and at the discretion of the field instructor and the student intern. The intern, under the supervision of the Field Instructor will provide investigation and short term case management to the clients assigned.  

Intern Training & Educational Opportunities:M SW second year interns at APS will receive a comprehensive 4-week structured training before receiving a caseload under the supervision of their individual field instructor. The structured training topics include 1) bio-psychosocial assessment, 2) risk factors for abuse/neglect, 3) modes of APS investigations, 4) development of service plans and 5) community resources. Aside from classroom training, the interns will shadow various workers in the field to observe various types of APS responses.  They will also go on “field trips” to increase knowledge of community resources.  Following the training session, the interns will be scheduled to go on monthly field trips as part of the continuing education process learning about resources in the community.

Intern Benefits: (Include stipend, conferences, car, food, etc.) Stipends will be dependent on the funds available each year, thus not guaranteed. The interns will be able to participate and attend conferences recommended and authorized by the Field Instructor.  The interns will have access and are required to use the county cars during home visits. The interns must have proof of a valid driver's license and of auto insurance prior to usage of the county car.
