Program Description:

This is a new program on the SF State campus (started in 2005) to assist undergraduate students who were formerly in foster care (or out of home placement).  The program consists of case management services to assist the students with on campus, as well as external community services.  Services will include case management, campus orientation, counseling/psych referrals, housing, child care (if needed), mentoring, etc.

Clientele Served:

Clients are undergraduate students at San Francisco State University who were formerly in foster care.

Issues Program Addresses:

Students with a history of foster care have lower GPAs, lower retention rates, and lower graduation rates than similarly disenfranchised students (i.e. low socio economic status, 1st time college students in their families, other life struggles, etc.)

Intern Assignments:

Clinical case management, facilitating a support group, documentation, recruitment, speaking to community partnerships with Program Director and Field Supervisor, college advising, program development, grant writing (possibly).

Intern Training & Educational Opportunities:

Community trainings on foster care, substance use, mental health, higher education
