Program Description:
UCSF Medical Center is recognized throughout the world for innovative patient care, advanced technology and pioneering research. We are consistently ranked one of the nation's top hospitals, according to an annual survey by U.S. News & World Report. As a tertiary medical center, UCSF provides care to patients from all over the Bay Area. UCSF social workers provide services to patients in inpatient and outpatient (clinic-based) settings. We have three main campuses: Parnassus, Mission Bay, and Mt Zion, as well as a number of primary care clinics in other parts of the city. Services that our social workers provide include: crisis intervention; grief/loss counseling; substance abuse and mental health counseling; abuse/neglect assessments; and referrals to community programs. Social workers are frequently consulted on homeless, mentally ill, substance-abusing, and uninsured patients, and are considered experts in these areas. Social workers also actively participate in family meetings and assist patients/families with decisions around end of life choices. |
Primary Issues that the Program Addresses:
Helping patients cope w/ new diagnoses and terminal illnesses; providing support around end of life issues; substance abuse/mental health counseling and referrals; creating safe discharges for psychosocially complex patients; linking patients and families to appropriate community resources etc. |
Populations and Clientele Served:
Adults ages 18 and over. Patients come to UCSF from all over the Bay Area for specialized care. They come from many different socio economic groups. |
Types of Services Offered by the Program:
Grief/loss counseling; brief counseling; resources/referrals; etc. |
Intern Assignments and Learning Opportunities:
We are offering 3 exciting INPATIENT placements for the 2018/2019 academic year: 1.Inpatient Hematology Oncology: The HemOnc service at UCSF is very large and growing. The intern on this service will work with patients who have blood and bone marrow cancers including Leukemia, Lymphoma, and Multiple Myeloma. Many of these patients are hospitalized for several weeks and therefore this placement offers the opportunity to work with patients on a longer-term basis. Patients admitted to this service range in age from 19 to 65+ and are at varying stages of illness. The intern will have the opportunity to assess patients who are newly diagnosed with cancer, as well as work with those whose cancer has progressed. The intern will also co-facilitate the Community Group that is led by their supervisor. (Location: 505 Parnassus Avenue) 2.Inpatient Hematology Oncology & Inpatient Medicine: This is a split placement so the student will have two supervisors and spend time on both services (schedule TBD). The Inpatient HemOnc service is described above. The Inpatient Medicine service is a fast-paced, high volume service and the intern will develop excellent brief assessment skills and learn about crafting a safe discharge plan. The patient population on this service is varied but Social Work referrals tend to be for psychosocially complex patients, including patients who are homeless and with substance abuse and/or mental health histories. (Location: 505 Parnassus Avenue) 3.Inpatient Palliative Care Consult Service: The Palliative Care team is a consult service that provides additional support to the inpatient teams around symptom management and end of life care/issues. The intern should have an interest in end of life work and a maturity to be able to handle challenging and emotionally charged patient situations. The Palliative Care team is a multidisciplinary team so the intern will have the opportunity to work closely with staff and students from many other disciplines. (Location: 505 Parnassus Avenue) Prospective students should sent their resume and cover letter to Meher Singh, Chief Clinical Social Worker at UCSF, email: Meher.Singh@ucsf.edu . In your cover letter, please indicate which placement(s) you are interested in interviewing for. Also, please be prepared to bring a writing sample to the interview. |
