Organization Description

The Center engages, empowers and advocates to achieve a more equitable society and fosters an ever-improving quality of life for the LGBTQ community. It has been providing a variety of health, social, advocacy, legal, and service programs to the LGBTQ community in the Greater Long Beach area for three decades. In 2014 we became The LGBTQ Center of Long Beach.Today, we serve over 21,000 people a year and include an array of services including support groups, workshops and seminars, youth services, legal assistance, employment referrals, rental and roommate referrals, a hate crimes hotline, mental health counseling, cultural and social activities including QSpeak and the QFilm Festival, educational forums, HIV prevention and support programs, and a thriving volunteer program with an active database of over 300 volunteers. The Center also provides meeting space for more than 20 community groups each month.

Program Information

The LGBTQ Center Long Beach advances equity for LGBTQ people through culturally responsive advocacy, education, programs, and services. We envision fully affirming communities where all LGBTQ people live in health, wellness, safety and prosperity. We have been providing health, social, legal, and advocacy services for over 40 years and currently serve over 25,000 people a year.

Health & Safety

We have different programs designed to support our Youth ages 13-15 and Older Adults ages 50+. We welcome and encourage participants of all abilities to attend our programs and therefore our volunteers are exposed to a variety of demographics and diverse backgrounds. We are a testing site for HIV/STD and have folks coming into the space who are immune compromised. COVID Vaccinations are required for all volunteers and staff.

The Center offers programming and services for LGBTQ elders.Student supervision varies depending on the service assignment. Some positions may be completed remotely, with weekly or bi-weekly check-ins with their supervisor. Other positions will be working directly with their supervisor for the majority of their service.

Some service learning opportunities can be done completely remote with limited support from supervisor where as, if the volunteer role is in person then the student will have physical access to their supervisor 100% of the time.
