Program Description:
Jail Health Services’ Behavioral Health program (BHS) has provided psychiatric treatment to the inmates at the San Francisco City and County Jail systems since 1973. The organization has previously operated as a county-contracted nonprofit and is currently in the process of converting to a civil services position. This conversion is expected to be complete prior to the 2017-2018 academic year. BHS offers a full spectrum of mental health care including evaluation and assessment, crisis intervention, individual and group therapy, medication management, court-ordered evaluations, day treatment program services, and re-entry planning services. Our intern program provides the valuable opportunity for students to work with a diverse population within this system.
|
Primary Issues that the Program Addresses:
The primary goals are to reduce recidivism and improve health outcomes by stabilizing clients while they are incarcerated and linking inmates with mental illness to treatment in the community.
|
Populations and Clientele Served:
Men and women incarcerated in the SF County Jail system. This culturally and diverse population includes TAY, Veterans, homeless, and individuals impacted by a wide range of psychiatric and substance use-related disorders.
|
Intern Assignments and Learning Opportunities:
There are two different tracts that students can apply for in this program:
General Clinical Care The general clinical program is focused on treating those with severe and persistent mental illness as well as those clients who are in acute psychiatric distress. The clinical staff is represented by a variety of disciplines including marriage and family therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers. This clinical team provides in-custody psychiatric care using a variety of theoretical perspectives bridged to evidence-based practice models. Responsibilities will include: clinical care in psychiatric housing units, group therapy, psychiatric stabilization, brief individual therapy, crisis intervention and post-release planning.
Reentry Clinical Care The Reentry Team provides reentry-focused clinical care. Services include providing reentry-focused treatment, ensuring continuity of care between the jail and the community, working with the criminal courts, conducting court ordered evaluations and assessments, and acting as a liaison between the various systems impacting the lives of inmates with severe and persistent mental illness.
Responsibilities will include: reentry focused brief individual and group therapy, psychosocial assessments, court ordered evaluations, and referrals to and collaboration with community treatment providers.
|
Other Specialized Training and Educational Opportunities:
BHS provides students with 1 hour of individual supervision and 2 hours of group supervision weekly. Additionally, students will participate in a monthly lecture series hosted by the Department of Public Health and agency in-services. There may be opportunities during the year to attend professional workshops and conferences.
