Program Description:
Founded in 1974 , Richmond Area Multi-Services, Inc. ( RAMS) is a private, not-for-profit mental health agency that is committed to advocating for and providing community based , culturally-competent, and consumer-guided comprehensive services. RAMS offers over 30 clinical programs in over 90 sites citywide. Services aim to meet the behavioral health , social, vocational, and educational needs of the diverse community of the San Francisco Area , with special focus on the Asian & Pacific Islander American and Russian-speaking populations . RAMS believes in serving clients in their primary or preferred language( s) of treatment, supporting consumer choice & empowerment, and advocating for the accessibility to services. Annually , the agency serves and outreaches to about 18 , 000
adults , children , youth , and families and provide services in over 30 languages, including Asian languages – Cambodian , Chinese ( Cantonese, Mandarin , Toishanese, Taiwanese), Farsi, Hindi, Japanese, Korean , Tagalog , Thai, and Vietnamese – Russian and Spanish . To meet the diverse community needs , RAMS offers over 30 clinical programs in over 90 sites citywide. The MSW placement would be at the Fu Yau Project, which provides prevention and early intervention mental health services to the family resource centers and childcare community that cares for children , ages 0-5 years old . The Fu Yau Project is funded through the SF Department of Public Health Behavioral Health Services - Child , Youth and Family - System of Care, Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation Initiative with funding from the SF Human Services Agency , SF Department of Children , Youth & Their Families , San Francisco Families and Children Commission , Preschool for All, and Mental Health Services Act.
Primary Issues that the Program Addresses:
Through the provision of early childhood mental health consultation services , RAMS ( as part of the San Francisco Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation Initiative) seeks to improve children’s readiness to enter kindergarten , to strengthen and support families , and to support continuous quality improvement of high quality early care and education programs.
Consultation services aims to increase the childcare center capacity , increase staff and parent/caretaker understanding of the child’s emotional and developmental needs, supporting communication , improve child behavior , and improve child /family linkage to resources .
Populations and Clientele Served:
The Fu Yau Project strives to provide high-quality clinical, cultural, and linguistically appropriate services to the population we serve. The multi-disciplinary staff members appropriately reflect the unique language skills and cultural competence needed to provide services for the children, families, and teaching staff of the childcare programs. Fu Yau currently provides services at over 50 childcare centers, family resource centers, and home based services, which are located in 13 San Francisco neighborhoods. The program's current client demographics include the following: 99% are low-income families with limited resources; over 80% of the families are of Asian & Pacific Islander ethnicity, many of whom are from China and have limited or non-English speaking ability.
Types of Services Offered by the Program:
Fu Yau Project provides prevention and early intervention mental health services to the family resource centers and childcare community that cares for children, ages 0-5 years old. Services includes the following: on-site program and child observation; clinical consultation with childcare staff and families; on-site intervention with individual and groups of children; parenting classes and support groups; and in-service training for the childcare staff relating to child development and mental health related issues.
Intern Assignments and Learning Opportunities:
RAMS is seeking a second year MSW Intern to join its Fu Yau Project which provides prevention and early intervention mental health services and consultation to the San Francisco childcare community for children, ages 0–5. This internship would be ideal for a MSW intern focusing on community mental health and working with children and families. This is a unique opportunity to work with young children and their families and the childcare community, providing cultural competent community services, on-site, at childcare centers & pre-schools, family resource centers, and home based service settings.
Potential Tasks & Projects for Intern
The MSW Intern would be part of the mental health consultation team, which provides services that include but are not limited to the following:
Weekly or biweekly on-site observation and consultation to program
Individual Services, including observation, case consultation, crisis intervention, mental health intervention, referral and case management of individual children and their families
Group Services, including child play therapy groups and parent/child therapy groups
Support Services for Families, including parenting classes, parent advisory committee, and psycho-education
workshops
Special events such as staff retreat and/or all day training for child care or family resource center staff as requested
and needed
In-services training to child care or family resource center staff
Other Specialized Training and Educational Opportunities:
The MSW Intern will gain experience in providing cultural competent prevention and early intervention strategies in working with diverse children and their families, consultation to the childcare community, working with the Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation model, and the use of evidenced-based instruments and models such as Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ), Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) Assessment, Triple P (Positive Parenting Program), Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS), CSEFEL Teaching Pyramid. In addition, the MSW Intern will gain knowledge in various early childhood educational philosophies, organizational
development practices, and adult learning processes.
Educational opportunities include case presentations and seminars/trainings (on-site is twice/month and agency-wide trainings are conducted weekly).
