STAFF MEMBERS PROPOSED AS FIELD INSTRUCTORS:
Program Description:
Aspire Monarch Academy is a TK-5 public charter school located in deep East Oakland near San Leandro. We have a strong school community that values supporting students academically, socially and emotionally. We pride ourselves on working closely with families and building a community based on mutual respect. The counseling department works with students who are experiencing behavioral and emotional struggles that have a negative impact on learning at school.
|
Primary Issues that the Program Addresses:
Due to circumstances that affect many of the families at our school, many students need help processing trauma and the stress that it can create. We also work with students to address social difficulties that they experience at school, as well as strained relationships with family members. Due to the fact that our school has many first-time students, we also work with students to help them adjust to life at school, away from their families and homes. Grief work is also necessary, for loved ones who have died but also family members who are incarcerated or forced to return to other countries.
|
Populations and Clientele Served:
Monarch Academy is an elementary school with students ages 4-11. ~95% of the school population identifies as Latino, with a small number of African American, Pacific Islander and Middle Eastern students. Work is mostly with students at the school, although some collateral work with parents and other families members occurs as well.
|
Types of Services Offered by the Program:
The counseling department at Monarch Academy offers individual and group counseling to students of all ages on campus. Less often, counselors work on case management to help families find appropriate services outside of the school. Consultation with outside providers also happens when appropriate.
These services are offered within the framework of our Behavioral Wellness Response to Intervention (RTI) system that seeks to serve all students at the appropriate level of intervention. We also work with the school staff to discuss universal supports for students to make sure that all members of the school community have access to our work.
|
Intern Assignments and Learning Opportunities:
Counseling interns at Monarch Academy work in various capacities to support social emotional work on campus. This includes individual and group counseling, collaborating with a Behavioral Wellness team, consulting with teachers, observations of students, organizing community resources and more!
|
Other Specialized Training and Educational Opportunities:
Interns are welcome to attend professional development that takes place at Aspire’s Home Office, which is located in Oakland. Interns are also encouraged to attend pertinent outside PD, which can be done to satisfy their internship hours as well. A basic introduction to school protocol is provided at the beginning of the internship, and regular weekly supervision can be utilized for discussing therapy techniques and other aspects of the work.
