Program Description:

Y Team provides individual and group counseling, case management, advocacy, family counseling, information and referral services, collaboration with community agencies, assessment, consultation, and crisis counseling.

Partnering with the West Contra Costa Unified School District, the Y provides coordination of health, mental health and support services at elementary, middle, and high school health centers in Richmond, Pinole and San Pablo.

Primary Issues that the Program Addresses:

The Y Team works with students around issues of community and domestic violence, addiction, trauma, grief/loss, disrupted family structures, legal issues, resiliency, success in school, and overall health and wellness.

Populations and Clientele Served:

The community served is primarily Latino and African American families living in West Contra Costa County.

60% Client has a family member with history of drugs/alcohol use or abuse.

55% Client has witnessed extreme violence.

42% Client has history of aggressive behavior.

41% Client suffers of has suffered from depression or anxiety

41% Client expresses fear of violence in the community.

40% Client has at least one parent deceased/whereabouts unknown.

35% Client and/or siblings suffer from neglect.

 

Types of Services Offered by the Program:

Individual, Group and Family Psychotherapy in the schools. Some case management and opportunities to work collaboratively with school staff and community members when appropriate.

Intern Assignments and Learning Opportunities:

Our interns and trainees provide up to 10 hours of direct psychotherapy services each week. They will participate in weekly individual and group supervision as well as a weekly didactic training on topics including: cultural humility, mandate reporting laws, working with families, diagnosing, tools of the trade, developmental trauma, attachment therapy, sand tray basics, play therapy, art therapy, conducting groups in schools, restorative justice, mindfulness, grief and loss, foster care youth, sex trafficking, harm reduction, LGBTQQ youth, conflict mediation, termination, and case formulation.

Other Specialized Training and Educational Opportunities:

Trainees will participate in a 4 day orientation before their placement in schools. It is facilitated in 2 day blocks over 2 weeks.

Student Availability:

Days preferred: There will be a choice of Group supervision on Tuesday and Wednesdays 3-5 and a required training Thursday 9-11. The remainder of the schedule is negotiated with supervisor and school

Hours preferred: Primarily school hours, with occasional early evenings to accommodate meetings with parents.
