Program Description:
The Berkeley High School Special Education Counseling Program offers a wide range of clinical practice learning opportunities with the diverse student populations of Berkeley and the surrounding communities. Interns at BHS will gain a unique understanding of school-based mental health services; attend Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and case management meetings and have the opportunity to participate in clinical trainings. MSW Interns will have regular collaboration with school psychologists, special education case managers, teachers, administrators and restorative justice coordinators on the Berkeley High campus. Additionally, interns will have a chance to learn how mental health services are coordinated and delivered at BHS (micro, meso, and macro levels) by participating in regular meetings with Berkeley Mental Health, BHS academic counselors, and the school-wide intervention team.
Interns will develop clinical counseling skills through individual and group therapy sessions and maintain a caseload of 8-10 clients. Additionally, interns will learn to perform clinical assessments, develop therapeutic goals and provide clinical documentation. Individual supervision with a licensed clinical social worker will be provided on a weekly basis and other opportunities for consultation and support are readily available due to the small size of the program.

Primary Issues that the Program Addresses:
The Berkeley High School Special Education Counseling Program serves a diverse population of students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) at Berkeley High. The program supports students with a myriad of mental health issues and learning differences to have a positive social and academic experience through individual and group counseling.
Students in the special education department present with many challenges that at times, impede their access to the social and academic opportunities at school. Students often face stigma related to their learning and mental health issues and counseling can provide an outlet to process difficult experiences, develop coping strategies and personal resources to manage the stress and struggles of students at school and in the community.
