Program Description:

James Monroe Elementary serves students kinder-academy to sixth grades. We provide social emotional learning, therapeutic groups and individual interventions.  We utilize restorative practices to solve, community, group and classroom challenges.

We work with families to assist and support them in increasing their students’ wellness.

Primary Issues that the Program Addresses:

Our program attempts to provide resiliency factors and education to students faced with adverse experiences that challenge their functioning in the school, home and community environments.  We try to provide as much psychoeducation about emotional identification and regulation to students as possible in an attempt to increase their engagement in their education.

Populations and Clientele Served:

James Monroe Elementary provides educational services to kinder-academy to sixth grade. We have 407 students. Our students are primarily Hispanic and in poverty. Our students’ main housing sources are low-income and government subsidized.  Our students have a high incidence of trauma exposure due to their home and community environments.

Types of Services Offered by the Program:

Due to the population of our school we provide a range of mental health services.  We teach Kimochis social emotional curriculum, restorative specialists/restorative practices, anger management groups, divorce groups, individual therapy, case management, as well as classroom and family interventions.

Intern Assignments and Learning Opportunities:

Students will have a wide range of opportunities due to the depth and variety of our student needs. A variety of classroom social emotional groups, case management, small group work as available, individual therapy as appropriate.
