Program Description:

Queer LifeSpace provides individual, couples, and group counseling to the LGBTQQIA+ communities.   Our mission is to create a safe space for the LGBTQQIA+ communities and our allies.  Our client-centered, integrated mental health and substance abuse treatment is designed to empower, inform, and provide a platform for healing and growth.

Primary Issues that the Program Addresses:

The program provides direct services to clients struggling with trauma, issues related to oppression/discrimination, mood disturbance, phase of life issues, issues related to transition, coming out issues, substance use/abuse issues, issues related to the impact of environmental stressors, family of origin issues, and relationship issues in general.  (This list is not comprehensive)

Populations and Clientele Served:

Queer LifeSpace provides services to adolescents, transitional aged youth, adults, and seniors.  Approximately 40% of our clients identify as male and approximately 40% of our clients identify as female.  Approximately 20% of our clients identify as transgender, gender non-conforming, gender fluid, gender queer, or some alternate gender classification.  The majority of our clients identify as LGBQ, but 3% of our client population identifies as heterosexual.   Approximately 62% of our clients identify as white/Caucasian, approximately 18% of our clients identify as mixed race, 10% identify as black/African American, 6% identify as Latino, Latina, Latinx, and 4% identify as Asian/Pacific Islander.

Types of Services Offered by the Program:

Intern Assignments and Learning Opportunities:

Interns will hold a case load of up to 10 clinical hours.  They will be providing some combination of individual, couples, &/or group psychotherapy.  Interns will also be expected to engage in some case management and client advocacy.  Interns will receive 2 hours of group supervision and 1 hour of individual supervision per week.  Interns will also be expected to attend a weekly training or peer review.  Interns will also be expected to conduct intake assessments on new clients and to occasionally do phone screenings with clients seeking services at Queer LifeSpace.

Other Specialized Training and Educational Opportunities:

Our weekly training calendar is designed to provide interns with fundamentals of clinical work (i.e., intake assessment, crisis intervention, documentation & treatment planning, etc.), that address issues that commonly come up in working with the queer community (i.e., clinical work with poly and non-traditional relationships, clinical work with transgender, gender non-conforming, and gender variant clients, etc.), that are have a social justice focus (i.e., cultural humility and bias, anti-oppression, etc.) and that explore various ways of implementing interventions and formulating cases (i.e., psychoanalytic perspectives in couples work, understanding the role of developmental trauma, etc.).
