Program Description:

The Self Sufficiency Program (SSP) provides housing assistance and support services to low-income parents who are in school to increase their earning power and become financially self-sufficient within 1-2 years. Participants receive subsidized rent while they complete an education or job training program and find employment in their field.

Primary Issues that the Program Addresses:

Some of the primary issues that SSP addresses are the lack of affordable housing, unemployment issues, mental health issues, lack of employable skills, lack of parenting and life skills, and lack of academic and professional skills/training.

Populations and Clientele Served:

SSP serves parents with dependents 18 years old and younger.

Types of Services Offered by the Program:

Housing, financial coaching/literacy, case management, counseling, life coaching, and life skills workshops

Intern Assignments and Learning Opportunities:

We are looking for 2 Interns who would like to (1) provide case management services to our SSP clients or (2) build a therapeutic relationship with SSP clients and help them to address barriers to self-sufficiency.

The Intern who would like to provide case management services will carry a case load of 3-5 clients throughout the academic year. They will also assist with information and referral services to other vulnerable population (i.e. Veterans, individuals with special needs, individuals with mental health issues, and others who may need extra support/services) they may be in contact with through our property development office.

The Intern who would like to provide family counseling services will be meeting with 5-10 SSP clients throughout the academic year and will learn behavioral assessment, counseling techniques, how to teach coping skills for the specific needs of our population.  They too will also assist with information and referral services to other vulnerable population (i.e. Veterans, individuals with special needs, individuals with mental health issues, and others who may need extra support/services ) they may be in contact with through our property development office.

Other Specialized Training and Educational Opportunities:

The Intern will be supervised by the Director of the Programs, who is a MSW with over 17 years of experience working with at risk populations. Intern will also have the opportunity to receive supervision from currently practicing therapist(s) contracted by HIP Housing.  In addition to skill development, the Intern will be given the opportunity to attend trainings such as Motivational Interviewing or ASIST (suicide prevention) and participate with mental health initiatives as offered by the County of San Mateo.
