Program Description:

Interns are the glue that keeps our office together. With only four paid staff to meet the needs of an entire district, our office relies on people who generously help us out. Since you’re donating your time, our office is very interested in learning from each individual’s interest areas and facilitating learning in these areas whenever possible. We strive to make your time in the office worthwhile and meaningful to you. We encourage those that wish for greater responsibility and more opportunities to come into the office at least 16 hours a week.

Primary Issues that the Program Addresses:

There is a tremendous depth and breadth of issues that are covered at the office. Some of Supervisor Yee’s priorities include children, youth and families (particularly 0-5 year olds), Vision Zero (the City’s goal of 0 traffic deaths by 2024), public safety, budget/accountability of public dollars and Participatory Budgeting, seniors, land use and family housing.

Populations and Clientele Served:

Supervisor Yee represents both citywide residents in San Francisco with a focus on District 7 which is located in the southwestern part of the city including the neighborhoods of Inner Parkside, Twin Peaks, West Portal, Forest Hill, Miraloma Park, Sunnyside, Westwood Park, St. Francis Wood, Monterey Heights, Ingleside, Parkmerced, and Lake Merced as well as SFSU and City College.

Types of Services Offered by the Program:

Constituent Services- As the first and many times the only person that constituents will talk with when they contact their Supervisor, how your interaction goes with the constituent will have a huge effect on how they see their Supervisor.  Interns will have the opportunity to interact and work with constituents who contact our office mostly for two reasons, to address a Policy and research and draft legislation.

Intern Assignments and Learning Opportunities:

  • Hands-on substantive opportunity to learn about policy, community engagement, and public service including, but not limited to direct experience with policy analysis and development, opportunity to learn the inner workings of city hall at the Board of Supervisors, and office management
  • Opportunity to gain practical skills on constituent services.  These cases can be regarding nearly anything, ranging from potholes not being fixed to someone being evicted to having problems with neighbors.
  • Monitoring committees and creating policy briefs
  • Research to inform legislation recommendations

Other Specialized Training and Educational Opportunities:

Opportunity to attend and participate in meetings with D7 residents and associations, City/County departments, advocates and non-profits, as well as community meetings in the district. Invitations to attend and participate in events as appropriate.
