University students will work directly with K-8 students in urban classroom settings. School has a diverse student population in terms of language, culture, gender and socio-economic background (minimum 27% of minority student population).
Program Information Walteria Elementary School located in south Torrance is home to the Walteria Wildcats. Walteria has an approximate total enrollment of 680 students making it one of the larger elementary schools in the Torrance Unified School District.
Walteria has a high level of parental, staff, faculty, and community commitment contributing to a successful and safe environment. The PTA provides academic and cultural enrichment with assemblies, field trips, and art and music programs.
EDEL 200: INTRODUCTION TO THE TEACHING PROFESSION, 45 hours. Student will participate in a regular, self-contained K-8 classroom, preferably an inclusive classroom, in a core academic area (not departmentalized, special education, computer labs, after-school programs, etc.)
EDEL 300: CULTURAL AND LINGUISTIC DIVERSITY IN SCHOOLS, 40 hours. Student will participate in an urban K-8 classroom, preferably and inclusive classroom.
EDEL 380: TEACHING AND LEARNING IN A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY, 45 hours. Student will participate in a regular, self-contained K-8 classroom, preferably an inclusive classroom, in a core academic area (not departmentalized, special education, computer labs, after-school programs, etc.)
