Organization Description

The Institute for Health & Aging (IHA) was established as an organized research unit (ORU) of the University of California, School of Nursing devoted to the study of health and aging issues. The department’s goal is to optimize the health and aging of individuals, communities, and society through research, education and public service in the social and behavioral sciences. IHA is one of the premier health and aging research units in the world, and our research is recognized nationally and internationally. IHA faculty members have made major contributions to the fields of health policy, aging, health promotion, the economics of tobacco control, and disability; and are major collaborators with both the California Department of Public Health and the United States Department of Health & Human Services.

Program Information

We have a 5 year NIH funded community-based randomized control trial (RCT) which takes place in existing senior centers throughout the San Francisco to implement and evaluate a novel approach – choral singing – for promoting health and well-being of older adults. If successful, results from this RCT may increase awareness of the health benefits of community choral programs and help complement current public health strategies to focus more closely on the health benefits of participation in community arts programs, such as community choirs. Community arts programs like these are not currently included in health promotion recommendations, despite increasing evidence showing their benefit to health and well-being of older adults.
