Program Information

The Orange County Department of Education is a large organization with many divisions. The Student Services Department/ Clinical Services programs (Formerly called Safe Schools & Support Services) is dedicated to supporting students through exemplary programs custom-designed to meet their needs. The students serviced by our clinical programs overwhelming obstacles in their everyday lives that make academic success very difficult. Many students are foster youth, on probation, homeless, victims of abuse, teen parents, and/or live in high crime neighborhoods with limited resources. Our clinical programs provide support services in a variety of areas including: school-based mental health services and case management; mental health and re-entry support services for incarcerated juveniles, crisis response services, gang prevention and intervention, alcohol and other drug prevention services, as well as small and large scale events, trainings, and conferences. In addition to the macro level work of youth development programs that are implemented across Orange County, we have 3 programs in which graduate and undergraduate level interns are currently accepted. All of our programs are school based as we work under the umbrella of the Orange County Department of Education. Our programs target the most high risk and disenfranchised children, adolescents, and families. Our programs are as follows: ACCESS - ACCESS (Alternative, Community, and Correctional Schools and Services) is Orange County's alternative education program for students who have not been successful in conventional district high schools settings. Typically, our ACCESS students are middle and high school aged youth who have chronic issues with truancy, substance abuse, probation, gang involvement, low socioeconomic status, trauma, and severe credit deficiency. Services are offered in our alternative school settings and include individual, group, and family therapy along with case management services and crisis response. Santa Ana USD- The SOS (Safety of Students) mental health program is characterized by school based mental health services currently being offered to students, grades K-12, who are enrolled in the Santa Ana Unified School District. Currently, Santa Ana schools and the district contract with OCDE to provide critical mental health services to their most high risk populations. Referrals generally include one or more of the following presenting problems: Truancy, trauma, depression, anxiety, anger issues, lack of motivation, family issues, bullying, substance use, child abuse, relationship issues, self-esteem, self-harm, and/or suicide ideation. Services offered in these programs include individual, group, and family therapy, along with case management services, skills building, and crisis intervention. Clinical providers and interns work collaboratively alongside school administrators, counselors, and other support staff to meet the needs of each student referred. Institutions- Schools within the juvenile institutions in Orange County are currently operated by OCDE's ACCESS division. As a result, we have been able to partner with probation in order to implement mental health, substance abuse treatment, and case management services across all juvenile facilities in the county. Services are offered in a forensic setting to minors who have been charged and adjudicated of crimes. Minors serve out their sentences in the juvenile institutions and our providers collaborate with the school staff, the OC Probation Department, the OC Health Care Agency, and OC Alcohol & Drug Abuse Services in order to ensure that minors have access to comprehensive treatment. Collaboration with school personnel including teachers, administrators, tutors, and para-educators is critical to the success of our programs as all services are hosted by the school sites. Services include individual, group, and family therapy along with substance abuse counseling.
