Opportunity Summary 

Position Description 

Support North Coastal Prevention Coalition's efforts to prevent underage drinking and providing alcohol to minors.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes

  • Goal 1: Increase partnership and collaboration with young adults in reducing underage drinking
  • Sub-committee 1/Objective 1: recruitment of 18-25 year olds, who are interested in ATOD prevention policy and advocacy
  • Task: conduct outreach in areas highly populated with youth (i.e. campuses, youth centers etc.)
  • Task: plan, schedule and implement underage drinking town halls/forums
  • Task: provide feedback and suggestions to implementing community-level underage drinking prevention strategies

 

  • Goal 2: Decrease alcohol use among youth ages 12-17 by decreasing youth access to alcohol from social sources
  • Sub-committee 2/Objective 2: Amend Oceanside’s Social Host Ordinance to include civil/administrative penalties and increase enforcement of the social host ordinance by 20%.
  • Task: Develop advocacy campaign to amend Oceanside social host ordinance and increase enforcement 
  • Sub-task: develop issue brief for policy makers
  • Sub-task: Develop fact sheets to enlist public support
  • Sub-task: Gather support through signature campaign, postcards, letters, etc
  • Sub-task: Attend city council meetings in support of policy change
  • Sub-task: Identify 5 opportunities to present and present about SHO and policy efforts on campus to raise awareness’
  • Sub-committee 3/Objective 3: Implement a media campaign designed to increase young adults’ perception of risk in providing alcohol to minors by 20%, as measured by a pre-post public intercept survey.
  • Task: Distribute and collect 200-300 surveys from young adults about underage drinking prevention. 
  • Task: Create and test social media prevention messages

Length of position: 180 hours minimum
