Organization Description

California State University, Stanislaus serves a diverse student body of more than 9,000 at two locations in the Central Valley — a beautiful 228-acre campus in Turlock and the Stockton Center, located in the city’s historic Magnolia District. Widely recognized for its dedicated faculty and high-quality academic programs, the University offers 43 majors, 41 minors and more than 100 areas of concentration, along with 15 master's degree programs, seven credential programs and a doctorate in educational leadership.

Program Information

Financial & Support Services department handles a wide variety of financial functions including, but not limited to: General Ledger journal entries, monthly general ledger account reconciliations, trial balance review, financial statement preparation, various tax document preparation, accounts payable, billing and accounts receivable, procurement and contracts, post award accounting and compliance, budgeting, cashiering and cash management, investments, endowments, fixed asset accounting and property control, auditing, and reporting and compliance.

The Financial & Support Services team at Stanislaus works on the Shared Services model, providing business services for both the university and its four non-profit auxiliary organizations. This would allow an accounting intern to have a broad level of exposure to many financial functions for governmental accounting and non-profit accounting, as well as expose the intern to the reporting cycles associated with our fiscal year 7/1/XX – 6/30/XX.

Brief description of the work the student will complete during this experience:

• Monthly Trial Balance Review
• Monthly/Annual Report Preparation (Statement of Revenue, Expense and Change in Net Position, Statement of Net Position, Cash Flow Statement)
• Accounts Payable Voucher Entry
• Accounts Receivable Billing and Collections
• Sales and Use Tax Review, UBIT, 990 Information Return Preparation
• Post Award Accounting / Compliance Requirements – Grants and Contracts
• Audit process overview and preparation of provided by client schedules
• Procurement & Contract Services
• Budget
• Fixed Asset Accounting
• Property Control
• Shipping/Receiving as it affects accounting
• Cashiering – cash controls and segregation of duties
• Systems overview – PeopleSoft, Data Warehouse, Various Reporting Tool
