Organization Description

The Third Street Community Center was founded by community leaders who saw a critical need to help underserved children and youth succeed academically and thrive socially. We offer a place where people of all ages and backgrounds are actively engaged in enriching themselves and their community through education, arts, technology and service. Our approach takes into account the importance of our community in helping children develop their self-esteem and increase their motivation to do well in school. Each year, we welcome over 250 volunteers who serve as mentors, tutors, positive role models, and more. Our volunteers create an energetic learning environment that helps children envision the path towards a college education. The following are the various programs have volunteer opportunities available. The AFTER SCHOOL ACADEMIC PROGRAM helps bridge the achievement gap by providing 45-50 children with tutoring in literacy and math, mentoring, science education, technological exploration, and multiple enrichment opportunities. During the program, academically at-risk children are encouraged to do well in school and inspired to pursue a college education. The YOUNG ENGINEERS PROGRAM teaches 4th through 12th grade youth team building and leadership skills while providing career exploration opportunities in STEM related fields. (only open to engineering majors) Our SUMMER OF LEARNING PROGRAM serves over 100 elementary school children from June to July. This program focuses on literacy development but offer other activities such as art, STEM, an elective period, and field trips. Our STEM FOR LATINA GIRLS INITIATIVE serves 20-25 Latina girls in grades 4-8. Girls participate in career exploration workshops and tour various Bay Area tech companies to further explore careers in STEM.
