Service-Learning OpportunitiesAt — Community Roots Garden

Opportunity Summary

Farming an acre with volunteers is no small feat. Many hands are needed, and we welcome yours! We invite you to come dig, weed, learn, teach, ask questions, share your ideas. You can help in whatever way you’d like. It is a rewarding project because it is tangible—you can watch it grow!—and for the simple satisfaction of working with others on something meaningful. Working in the garden is also a fun way to complete needed community service hours. No experience necessary. Community Roots Garden is a place where our mission is to grow a community of gardens and support garden leaders in neighborhoods throughout Ventura County. Share healthy local produce with the food insecure. Empower one another—through learning, teaching, and cooperating—to nourish ourselves justly, sustainably, and self-sufficiently. Restore wellness—to the land, the human spirit, and the community— through our core commitments to hunger relief, sustainability and caring.

1) Help during the week with basic organic garden maintenance tasks, including, but not limited to: harvesting, planting, compost tending, seed-saving, soil preparation, weeding, seed-starting, and watering. No experience necessary!
2) Work alongside garden manager on garden projects such as volunteer chef programs, social media upkeep (videos and photos), and educational programs.
3) Represent Community Roots Garden at outreach events such as community health fairs, volunteer fairs, or city festivals.
4) Upkeep informational and educational signage around the garden.
