Program Information

Internship opportunity available in the Youth Service Department of the main branch in Mankato, MN. Internship will give student experience working in a public library and student will gain knowledge of collection development; reference work and customer service; collection development; reader's advisory; and library programming (early literacy opportunities, etc.).

Learning opportunities might include:

1. Reference assistance and customer service: Assist reference librarian in basic reference and customer services activities. Employ prompt, courteous assistance to patrons with basic information regarding library materials, services and use of equipment.

2. Collection development: Work with reference librarian to learn about and assist with materials selection and acquisitions. Help to evaluate materials and services and assist in selecting appropriate materials to aid to the collection.

3. Reference assistance and reader’s advisory: Assist reference librarian in providing reference service to families and teachers at local schools. Work on opportunities to enhance current reader’s advisory opportunities including book displays, handouts, and other opportunities.

4. Library programming: Assist reference library with library activities that promote early literacy, reading, and learning including books displays, hands on activities, virtual activities, and the summer reading program.
