Peer Health Exchange

Organization Description

Peer Health Exchange's mission is to empower young people with the knowledge, skills, and resources to make healthy decisions. We do this by training college students to teach a skills-based health curriculum in under-resourced high schools across the country.

Program Information

 

The tasks/activities students will be performing for this opportunity:

-Learn PHE health workshops and how to teach them effectively
-Attend the mandatory Training Retreat
-Attend mandatory weekly Workshop Group Meetings to discuss health content and prepare for teaching
-Incorporate direction and evaluation from Leadership Council members and Site Supervisor in order to develop and improve their teaching skills
-Learn and commit to teaching one workshop per week in an assigned PHE partner high school 
-Build quality relationships with students in partner high school classes
-Plan and conduct a personal interest project that relates health content to student's field of study
-Work with Site Supervisor to establish PHE's presence on campus and recruit new members

By the end of this opportunity, students will have learned:

-How to partner with organizations and institutions in the local community
-How to exchange knowledge, skills, and resources with young people
-How to facilitate and use classroom management skills through firsthand classroom experience
-Interview and job skills such as public speaking and interpersonal skills
-Valuable health information
-Career opportunities with Peer Health Exchange and other nonprofits
-Information about the public service, public health, and education sectors
