Oxnard Union High School District Farm to School Program
Our Farm to School Program is designed for the students, by our students. Our mission is to ensure that students have access to good quality, fresh, and locally grown produce each day. We maintain school gardens as outdoor learning centers, provide nutrition education, purchase local fruits and vegetables for the cafeterias, develop student leaders, provide exposure to careers in the local agriculture industry, and engage our community to support our work and schools in meaningful ways.
We work with students at 7 of the 10 high schools in the Oxnard Union High School District, grades 9-12.
Students will be required to complete on-boarding process with OUHSD, which includes fingerprint and Livescan, TB test, and protocols for COVID safety. We do work with our special education students frequently, though a teacher and a paraeducator are always present when we have gardening classes or nutrition classes with our sped population.Gardening can be physically challenging work, which is something to keep in mind. We don't use any heavy machinery, only hand tools, shovels, etc. But wearing appropriate clothing- shoes especially- for garden days is essential. We can provide gloves and can teach anyone the proper way to use hand tools.
