Interfaith Food Ministry

Organization Description

We believe in a community where no one should feel the hurt of hunger. We work to feed the hungry and reduce food insecurity in Nevada County, providing nutritious groceries to thousands. With volunteers, donors, and partners, we distribute almost two million pounds of food annually, building community and ensuring no one goes hungry. Recognized for our impact, we were voted Best Non-Profit of Nevada County by our community!

Program Information

The scope of work can be tailored to each intern's program requirements and personal capabilities. We are a food pantry that distributes food on Mon.-Wed.-Fri. from 10-1 and every second Saturday from 10-12. On Tuesdays and Thursdays we are sorting donations and salvage from grocery stores, packing staples and specialty (for homeless clients) bags. Hours that people are needed M-W-F from 7 am to1:30pm and Tues. and Thursday from 7 am to 10:30/11 am. We have monthly food committee meetings where we discuss budget and nutrition, food costs, local purchases, partner agency budgets... There are executive committee meetings, board meetings, volunteer appreciation efforts and fundraising events that provide opportunities for learning more about administration. Daily operations gives the opportunity to work with many personalities and teaches patience, communication and problem solving among other skills . It would be possible to give the students a supervisory position as well where they would learn to coordinate and delegate with a group of volunteers to get a job done. On another note we are also trying to stay ahead of the curve where SB1383 is concerned, so students can learn more about this in practice and will be prepared for reducing waste in any career they may choose.

Our volunteer application is available on our website at interfaithfoodministry.org In the special skills box they should put "Student Intern" as well as any special skills they have. We do not require a resume or references from our volunteers but if that is something the students need to do on your end we can work with you on that. We could also work on coming up with an internship application if needed.
