Opportunity Summary 

MICOP unites leaders and allies to empower the Indigenous Mexican community on the Central Coast. At the core of our work is Plaza Comunitaria, a program that helps adults learn to read and write in Spanish and earn educational certificates up to the 8th-grade level. Education changes lives.   1. Plaza Comunitaria - MICOP's Plaza Comunitaria offers Spanish literacy courses to indigenous migrant youth and adults older than 15 years of age. Plaza Comunitaria utilizes its own curriculum as well as modules from the Instituto Nacional para la Educacion de los Adultos (National Institute for Adult Education) in Mexico. In addition, Plaza Comunitaria offers basic education to those who have not completed formal schooling.

  3. During monthly meetings, provide children with activities
  4. Sociology students can engage in data analysis
  5. Students can participate alongside Radio Indigena

MICOP is also interested in working directly with faculty from varied disciplines to build service-learning projects that support course outcomes.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

We hope that students will gain meaningful hands-on on experience in education, community engagement, and cross-cultural collaboration. This opportunity will have supported their leadership. Communication and teaching skills. More than technical skills students will walk away with a deeper understanding of the different intersecting identities that impact access to education and the importance of expanding educational community-based programs.

Opportunity Training 

Students will receive a general MICOP orientation and on-the-job training from our Plaza Comunitaria teachers. They will receive training on the Plaza Comunitaria curriculum and attendance system, as well as cultural awareness and sensitivity. We will maintain open lines of communication and provide additional training and mentorship as needed.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Since this program is in the evenings, it is important to mention that the students will never be left alone in the office; they will always be with a group. Depending on parking availability, you might have to park across the street from the office location.
