Service-Learning OpportunitiesAt — Mixteco/Indigena Community Organizing Project (MICOP)
- Plaza Comunitaria - MICOP's Plaza Comunitaria offers Spanish literacy courses to indigenous migrant youth and adults older than 15 years of age. Plaza Comunitaria utilizes its own curriculum as well as modules from the Instituto Nacional para la Educacion de los Adultos (National Institute for Adult Education) in Mexico. In addition, Plaza Comunitaria offers basic education to those who have not completed formal schooling.
- Support in literacy development

- Sociology students can engage in data analysis
- Students can participate alongside Radio Indigena
MICOP is also interested in working directly with faculty from varied disciplines to build service-learning projects that support course outcomes.
Students will have the opportunity to serve as teaching assistants and will learn all that is involved in teaching adults. They will gain exposure to teaching curricula and provide one-on-one support to participants. Students will learn to engage participants in the material and adapt the curricula to their diverse needs, skill sets, and goals.
Students will learn about the mission, services, and population this organization serves and the issues that impact this population.
Students will receive a general MICOP orientation and on-the-job training from our Plaza Comunitaria teachers. They will receive training on the Plaza Comunitaria curriculum and attendance system, as well as cultural awareness and sensitivity. We will maintain open lines of communication and provide additional training and mentorship as needed.
Since this program is in the evenings, it is important to mention that the students will never be left alone in the office; they will always be with a group.
