Service Learning Student Program at the Roundhouse AquariumAt — Roundhouse Aquarium Teaching Center (managed by the Oceanographic Teaching Stations, Inc.)

Opportunity Summary

Through this program, college students find their niche in our multifaceted teaching facility where they can explore various departments of the aquarium while gaining college credit. The SLS Program will primarily be focused on public education (engaging with the visitors during our public hours). We also have opportunities for SLS to get experience in our student education programs and help lead our virtual and in-person classes. We will also have limited opportunities for SLS to assist in animal and tank husbandy (aquarist tasks). Each opportunity will include a public education component and, because we are a small facility, we are unique in that there will be opportunities for cross training among the different areas. Specific duties will be specified during the SLS onboarding interview. SLS applicants may also reach out ahead of time with questions.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes

Service learning students (SLS) will have a broader knowledge of the marine life and local habitats of Southern California, while also observing them in person. Depending on the specific focus area, SLS will also gain experience in how programs are run at an aquarium (i.e. teaching classes, assisting with events, learning tank and animal husbandry, marketing, etc). Each opportunity will include a public education component and, because we are a small facility, we are unique in that there will be opportunities for cross training among the different areas. All SLS will gain professional development in public speaking, leadership, communication and teamwork, time management

Opportunity Training

The Roundhouse Aquarium will offer a group training (virtual or in-person, depending on the specific SLS focus) for all SLS. After the general training, they will have more one on one training with their assigned supervisor.
