Opportunity Summary 

The goal of the Peer Mentor Program is to provide academic, peer, and support services to freshmen students in order to successfully complete their educational goals. The Peer Mentor Program is designed to encourage and support first time freshmen students during their transition from high school to college. They will assist first time freshmen students in adjusting to college life.

Peer Mentors are among the best, brightest, and most diverse students. They have been through the college transition and know some of the challenges faced by freshmen. Peer Mentors will be assigned a cohort of students who they will meet with individually or in a group setting. Peer Mentors will provide appropriate support and referrals and monitor student progress.

Mentors will assist during New student Orientation (NSO), as well as the Freshman Success Program events and workshops. They may also be required to attend campus functions and serve as a spokesperson/representative for the program.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at sophomore standing (45 completed units) or higher and be willing to commit to employment for one year
  • Must be in good academic standing; minimum of 3.0 grade point average
  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 undergraduate units at CSU Stanislaus  
  • Must be available to attend Peer Mentor training on June 4, 2019
  • Must attend weekly/biweekly training meetings during the semester
  • Must be available to work in summer and the academic year
  • Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends for special event  
  • Must be able to handle confidential information with discretion
  • Must possess a professional demeanor with a positive attitude
  • Must have strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Must demonstrated above-average creative problem- solving, critical thinking, patience, decision-making
  • Must have the ability to work in a diverse, team-driven environment
  • Must possess self-motivation, a willingness to accept supervision and constructive feedback, and the ability to implement recommendations for improvement as directed
