LiBRE is currently outreaching to tenants in Long Beach to let them know about their rights as renters and connect them to free online workshops and free legal counsel through our Stay Housed LA program. When renters receive an eviction notice, 90% of the time if they do not have access to a lawyer they will likely lose their case and be kicked out of their homes. We want to keep renters in their homes, especially now during the pandemic, and share resources with 15,000 renters by the end of the year. We need people power to do this, so please come and help!
General and specific living conditions of tenants in Long Beach, including but not limited to issues of eviction rates, rent status, landlord issues, Section 8 housing, trends of city development, etc. They will also have learned how to effectively communicate to Long Beach residents what their rights are as renters, connect them to free legal services, and answer general questions related to the current housing situation in LA County
There will be a required 1 hour training where students will share introductions, learn more about LiBRE, our Stay Housed LA outreach program, our grant deliverables, why we conduct eviction defense outreach, what to expect as a phone banker or text banker, the current housing situation in LA County / CA, our outreach programs such as PDI, CallEvo and ThruText and how to log hours via AirTable. During volunteer shifts, we will share up to date knowledge on current housing data and trends in the city by reading recent articles and videos related to housing or city policies.
We encourage volunteers who make phone calls to use Google Voice to protect their identity and personal phone number. We have not come across unsafe or threatening phone or text conversations but volunteers can use discretion in responding to messages they receive. They will be not be forced to continue communicating with any correspondences that make them feel uncomfortable. In the event we will do in person outreach, we will mask up and bring sanitizing materials with us.
