Looking for a way to give back to the community? Passionate about educational equity? Join CovEd in providing mentorship to K-12 youth! CovEducation is an educational non-profit that provides free tutoring and mentorship to K-12 students from low-income communities or underrepresented backgrounds. We are a warm, volunteer-based community of over 6,000 volunteers from 450+ institutions, and have served 5,700+ mentees since March 2020. We are currently seeking undergraduate/postgraduate/grad students to volunteer virtually as mentors for K-12 students, particularly those with limited access to educational resources. Mentors serve not only as a source of academic support, but as role models for the student they work with. This will provide an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to students who have trouble accessing learning materials and mentorship.

How to recognize signs of and support students through mental/emotional stress, via socioemotional learning curriculum - A diverse range of mentorship styles and how to tailor them toward their mentee's strengths and challenges. - Training in pedagogy, workload management, and socioemotional skills before working with students - How to adapt to and provide feedback on mentorship effectiveness when working with students and peer mentors - How to engage students in a virtual learning environment.
We have worked with Research Professors from UC San Diego (Sally Sadoff), Brown University (Matthew Kraft), and Bentley University (Jeff Livingston) to develop a mentor training curriculum for effective pedagogy, student engagement, recognizing signs of mental/emotional stress, and socioemotional skills. All mentors are required to undergo a two-hour training workshop, and will be provided a detailed, week-to-week guideline on interacting with mentees. In addition, there will be peer-led meetings and supervised mentorship sessions to offer feedback on mentorship and allow mentors to adapt to and learn from new styles.

NOTE: You will be provided with a list of eligible mentee families that you can connect with to schedule tutoring sessions. The process to schedule and begin the sessions with a mentee family can take approximately 2 weeks. Please plan your time to complete your hours in time accordingly.
