Opportunity Summary 

DSH-Napa is an inpatient psychiatric hospital with a focus on individuals with civil and forensic commitments. Students have the opportunity to work on units with a focus on evidenced based treatment like DBT, TIC, Polydipsia, admissions, and long term units or work on a 5 star Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) or other units with a geropsych focus. We serve over 1260 patients of all ages from 18-90 years old, with our largest growing group of individuals over 50 years old. Students have opportunities to assist with interdisciplinary treatment planning, Advanced Health Care Directives, attend Bio-ethics meetings, and forensic court hearings. Students are trained to provide group and individual therapy to individuals with mental health challenges and other barriers to treatment. DSH-Napa is a teaching hospital. students receive extensive training and continuing educational opportunities. This is a very student-centric placement.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

By the end of this internship students will have experience providing groups and individual therapy with a focus on health and aging. They will have training on assessing capacity, performing biopsychosocial assessments as well as working on interdisciplinary teams with Psychiatry, Psychology, Rehab Therapy, Nursing, and Medical Physicians. Students will have gained the comfort and competence necessary to work in a forensic and mental health settings.

Opportunity Training 

Students receive daily support from LCSW Proctors (Task Supervisors), weekly individual clinical supervision from LCSW, and weekly 3-hour intercollegiate clinical supervision group with other MSWII students from 5 Bay area schools. This weekly group has incorporated speakers including, but not limited to Sacramento Supreme Court Judge, University of Sonoma Dean Emeritus, Documentary Film Maker, Intensive Substance Recovery Unit Director, CONREP Director, CDC Social Workers, and various community experts with a focus on how to become the best clinical social worker post MSW.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Students are provided personal alarm and trained on de-escalation techniques and self defense and are screened for elevated temperature and COVID symptoms daily prior to entering the sit. All employees are tested for COVID each day prior to entering their units. Contact tracing procedures employed and and utilize contact tracing to increase hospital and patient safety. All employees are required to wear a surgical mask inside and outside on campus and required to wear an N95 mask for those areas that may have been exposed to COVID.
