South Coast Emergency Medical Group

Program Information

South Coast Emergency Medical group specializes in emergency medicine and currently has 10 physicians and 15 scribes. The intern (Kelli Gonzales) will be a scribe and assist the emergency room physician in the emergency room. The duty of the ER Scribe is to perform the recording of all details of a patient???s visit, as dictated by the Emergency Room physician. ER Scribes will have the responsibility of accompanying the Emergency Physician on the patient examination in order to manage proper documentation of the visit. In doing so, this allows the doctor to spend more time with the patient. A scribe has many responsibilities and requirements. To name a few, scribes are expected to be able to multi-task, have legible handwriting, and possess a passion for the medical field. Many of our scribes are college-age students who are interested in becoming doctors, physician assistants, or nurses. Being a scribe allows for the opportunity to learn things that cannot be taught in the classroom, and to provide medical work experience that no other volunteer position or internship can offer. Outline of Essential Functions:1. Scribes are assigned to work with one physician per shift.2. Scribes accompany the physician upon patient interview and examination.3. Scribes document the physician dictated patient history, including history of present illness, review ofsystems, past medical and surgical history, family and social histories, medications and allergies.3. Scribes document physical examination findings and procedures as performed by the physician.4. Scribes document the results of laboratory and radiographic studies as dictated by the physician.5. Scribes document the correct time of patient care related activities, including physician to physiciancommunication, family communication and re-examination of the patient.6. When the physician concludes the patient???s encounter, the physician will review all documentationcompleted by the Scribe, make any necessary amendments, and sign the chart. The physician isultimately responsible for documentation of the patient???s encounter.7. The physician and the Scribe will make ???chart rounds??? to review patient status, delays, and any othercare-related issues.8. All orders for patient care must be communicated by the physician and not the Scribe.9. Scribes do not participate in any patient care and should refer all requests related to patient care to theresponsible physician or nursing staff; including, but not limited to, transporting specimens, answering phones, assisting patients, calling physicians, etc.
