Jewish Family Service Los Angeles - SOVA

Organization Description

Jewish Family Service Los Angeles (JFSLA) SOVA Valley provides free groceries to low-income families and individuals in addition to providing information and referrals to other community services. We serve over 6,000 people a month and have rescued almost 2 million pounds of food from local grocery stores since we started our food rescue program. We need help ensuring the product we receive daily safely gets from the store to our clients experiencing food insecurity.

Program Information

Edible Food Recovery Program A new law has been implemented as of January 2022 aimed to curb short-lived climate pollutants. It is the most significant waste reduction mandate to be adopted in California in the last 30 years. SB 1383 requires the state to reduce organic waste [food waste, green waste, paper products, etc.] disposal by 75% by 2025. In other words, the state must reduce organic waste disposal by more than 20 million tons annually by 2025. The law also requires that 20% of currently disposed edible food be recovered for human consumption by 2025. The implementation of SB1383 is increasing the amount of edible food available for recovery and redistribution to those in need. The SOVA program is one of LA County's largest food recovery organizations and we need your help to us grow this important program as more and more food become available for recovery. - You will be helping to save the environment and reduce food insecurity by supporting our Food Recovery initiatives! Valuable nutrition is saved from being wasted in landfills every day! - You will be vital in process of rescuing, sorting, pre-packaging, and sharing food from local grocery stores! - Checking food for food safety issues - Sorting food into categories and weighing for tracking - Inputting data into the MealConnect App - Communicating with SOVA staff and volunteers to pre-pack items for quick distribution of product, report waste, and report food safety issues
