Alliance on Aging

Organization Description

Alliance on Aging is one of the largest non-profit organizations in Monterey County that provides care and resources to senior citizens. As a community leader and advocate, we provide services and resources that address the challenges and opportunities of again. Serving over 7,000 individuals and families we provide support with the Medicare application process, peer support groups, nursing home information and referrals, as well as senior employment training and income tax service.

The Alliance on Aging was established in 1970 by a group of concerned local citizens who wanted to help seniors remain safely in their own homes for as long as possible. This volunteer driven organization which began as a single program with a handful of volunteers is now a multi-purpose senior service agency with over 200 volunteers.

Program Information

The specific part of the program for which we are seeking an intern is the Senior Peer Counseling SPANISH program. This program focuses on early intervention and prevention services that target individuals before the development of a disorder. We conduct support groups and wellness lectures throughout Monterey county as well as train, support and supervise peer counselors who provide individual peer counseling. Sample activities for an intern would be conducting support groups, screening intake calls to determine level of care needed, making mental health referrals and/or referrals to other appropriate services, supporting and training senior peer counselors, and conducting community outreach and coordinating wellness lectures.
