Monterey County Office of Education - MSW

Interns get a very rich and diverse experience in our special education department. The main emphasis is on case management; however, it can take some wide turns, including co-facilitating a Parent Support Group, helping to develop a one day county-wide Parent workshop, attending collaborative meetings (IEP's), helping parents work through accepting their child's disability and being a part of our Therapeutic Intervention Program (TIP) team. As a new intern, you are able to pick and choose what parts of this position you'd like to delve into.

"Monterey County Office of Education, Special Education Department serves students with cognitive impairment, orthopedic impairment, visual impairment, hearing impairment, disorders of language and speech, emotional disturbance and autism.

The School Social Work intern will assist in assessing home, school, and community factors that may affect a student's learning. They will assist in consulting with teachers, administrator and other staff regarding effective strategies for dealing with problems related to social, emotional, and academic needs. They will assist in providing interventions for students and families that help create positive learning environments for students. They will strengthen their knowledge and build strong working relationships with community agencies to better serve our students and their families.

They will have an opportunity to explore the many facets of a School Social Worker and if they desire - develop their own personal strength in one of the arenas."
