ACE TutorAt — Escondido Education COMPACT

Opportunity Summary

The Achievement Center Escondido is a year-round after school program designed to maintain community safety and promote long-term success for at-risk youth. Our goal is to aid in the prevention and intervention of youth involvement with the justice system by providing a variety of services to support their success. The program’s focus is to provide a structured, yet positive environment that allows youth to thrive through services such as tutoring/educational assistance, career exploration/work readiness training, group/individual counseling, and recreational activities (i.e. boxing, outdoor excursions, art, cooking). Student interns will assist in providing high school students with individualized tutoring in a variety of subjects such as Math, English, Science, Foreign Language, history, and more. Interns will be supervised at all times and opportunities to assist in other programming such as cooking, career exploration/work readiness training, and recreational activities may be available.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes

Student interns will have learned how to assist/mentor students to meet their academic goals and will learn to adapt to a variety of learning styles. Students will gain hands-on experience working with an at-risk population with different needs. Students will also learn how to work collaboratively with program staff to engage youth in the learning process.

Opportunity Training

Student intern will receive the following trainings: Mandated Reporting, Trauma Informed Care, Implicit Bias, Restorative Practices, Positive Youth Development, Cultural Training: Gangs, Youth Mental Health First Aid, Food Handler’s Certification (if assisting in cooking activities) Students will shadow staff during the initial portion of the training.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity

While student interns will be supervised 100% of the time they are with youth, it should be noted that some of the youth in the program are justice-involved with noted behavioral issues – student interns will never be asked to handle student discipline and should defer to the Program Manager for any issues.

Opportunity Application Instructions

Note: Interns should apply to positions well in advance as background checks can incur longer processing times.

Students will be asked to complete COMPACT's volunteer application, which can be found on our site: https://www.educationcompact.org/volunteer-form-adults -- Upon screening of application, students selected to move forward in the application process will undergo an initial interview with the volunteer coordinator. If selected to move on, they will be contacted by the Achievement Center Program Manager for a secondary interview to assess program fit and availability; if selected for placement they will then need to complete a background check (covered by our agency).
