Mental Heath Specialist InternAt — Waymakers Huntington Beach Youth Shelter

Opportunity Summary 

The Waymakers Youth Shelter is a co-ed and 12 bed, short-term crisis intervention shelter. The children we serve are those between the ages of 11-17. Our 2-3 week program is designed to benefit homeless, runaway, abused and at-risk youth as well as youth transitioning from hospital to home. During the youths’ stay, they receive program services including drug and alcohol prevention, educational groups and meetings, meals, recreation, supervision, intensive therapy, and the option of aftercare services. Our goal is to guide clients with group, individual, and family counseling to achieve successful family reunification. Students will engage with youth as a ole mode, Follow house rules and guidelines at all times, Assist with tutoring, Assist with cooking and cleaning (these tasks teach life skills to the residents), and Help maintain structure of daily program.

-Learn to be flexible, reliable, organized, self-motivated, assertive, and to ask for direction and take direction -Gain knowledge of the population being served and the issues being addressed -Show professionalism while engaging with youth, parents, staff and other professionals -Take initiative to learn program expectations and assist where needed

Opportunity Training 

Students will complete 16 hours of comprehensive training that includes: CPR/First Aid, Mandate Reporter, HCA Compliance, Program rules & expectations, emergency procedures, and any other additional training opportunities that are presented during the semester.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

There are no specific safety concerns for this opportunity. Students will be trained in safety and emergency procedures. Students are also expected to comply with any COVID policies that are in place.
