Service-Learning OpportunitiesAt — Climate First: Replacing Oil & Gas (CFROG)
Students in Dr. José Castro Sotomayor's Environmental Communications capstone course have the opportunity to partner with CFROG, a local environmental advocacy nonprofit in determining the effectiveness of various advocacy efforts.
Possible research projects could include:
- - Evaluate the curriculum and implementation of the Environmental Voices Academy, a 14-week program for Ventura County high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors that provides targeted environmental advocacy skills that budding activists can leverage within their communities and across their careers.
- - Explore how cultural competence can improve engagement and accessibility of local environmental communication efforts within the culturally diverse communities of Ventura County
- - Evaluate the methods, content, and effectiveness of CFROG's action alerts and invitations for the public to get involved in local decision making
- - A topic or research question of interest to students and meeting a need of CFROG
CFROG is also interested in working directly with faculty from varied disciplines to build service-learning projects that support course outcomes.
Gain knowledge, at least indirectly, about local environmental issues; Hands-on experience in research design, implementation, and analysis; Likely opportunity for qualitative research methods include interviews and focus groups
CFROG will provide students with an orientation to our mission, operations, projects, and staff. If needed per a specific research project, additional training will be provided (possibly mapping, oil and gas well database, etc.).
CFROG follows all local and state protocols for COVID-19
