Opportunity Summary 

Make a lasting impact in a student’s life while gaining hands-on experience in education and mentorship! The Emily Shane Foundation’s SEA (Successful Educational Achievement) Program supports underserved middle school students who are struggling academically and at risk of falling behind. As a mentor/tutor, you’ll work one-on-one with a student to help them improve in school, build confidence, and develop life skills. You’ll gain valuable insight into youth development, equity in education, and the power of relationship-based learning.

Our “Pass it Forward” philosophy encourages acts of kindness at each session, promoting social responsibility and empathy. This is a meaningful opportunity for students interested in education, psychology, social work, or community service. Training and ongoing support are provided.

1) MENTORING/TUTORING

The mentor/tutor will meet with each student for a minimum of one hour, twice weekly. Hours vary by school site and are typically between 2-6 PM, Monday through Friday. The mentor/tutor provides effective academic tutoring in all subjects in which the student is failing or genuinely struggling. In addition, a focus on organizational skills and study skills is essential to this position. Other aspects of the position include addressing missing assignments, incomplete work, and communicating with staff such as teachers and counselors. Once a week, a two-sentence email recap of your work with your student(s) must be sent to the Area Coordinator, Program Manager, and Executive Director, including a photo or screenshot taken during one of the two weekly sessions. Twice monthly, mentors/tutors are expected to complete reports regarding their student’s progress. The mentor/tutor must track each student’s grades on a progress document.

2) COMMUNICATIONS

Students can help create marketing materials that enhance marketing efforts, in addition to being involved with our digital presence and PR efforts. Be a part of a team whose work includes social media, newsletters, email blasts, promoting events, etc. This is a remote position and the ideal candidate should be able to average 2-5 hours per week. Must be present for a weekly 1-hour meeting. Hours are flexible as long as deadlines are met. 

-Marketing: Create marketing materials (flyers, images, blurbs for posting, emails blasts). Plan marketing content in advance. May include help with marketing the children's book written by our Executive Director, "Emily's Gift".

-Social Media: Help craft posts on all platforms and strategize audience engagement. Launch successful social media campaigns that will introduce the public to the foundation, its programs, and events. Update and keep all social media messaging current and regular. Add images with descriptions submitted by SEA program staff or from foundation events. Oversee the filing and organization of content, including screenshots, session and event videos/images, graphics, email blasts, etc. using Google Drive.

-PR: Help with outreach to the media and avenues to increase awareness of our foundation and support of our work. Communicate with local media outlets when we host major events or fundraisers. Connect with other foundations, media, and potential supporters via LinkedIn and other platforms. 

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

By the end of this opportunity, students will have learned how to build meaningful mentoring relationships, support academic growth in underserved youth, and apply effective strategies to encourage motivation and learning. They will gain firsthand insight into the challenges facing students in under-resourced communities, develop communication and leadership skills, and deepen their understanding of educational equity. Additionally, they will cultivate empathy, patience, and a commitment to social responsibility through our “Pass it Forward” model, which emphasizes kindness and civic engagement.

Opportunity Training 

We provide a mandatory training that all hired mentor/tutors must complete prior to commencing sessions with their student(s). This training is 2 hours long and, since the pandemic, is typically conducted via Zoom.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Aside from driving to a site to work (if in-person), there are no specific safety concerns. You would be working at a middle school.
