What: At the Torrance Farmers Market, GTLs will glean the market with another trained GTL or general volunteers from the public. GTLs are also welcome to bring a family member or friend who signs up to volunteer. GTLs distribute empty boxes to participating farmers market vendors who wish to donate food, collect the food donations at the end of the market, weigh and record the donations, and prepare the produce for pick-up by one of Food Forward’s partner hunger relief receiving agencies. GTLs recover hundreds of pounds of produce in a single glean, which goes directly to community members experiencing food insecurity!

Students will attend a glean as a general volunteer to get a feel for the experience. If it's a good fit, there are two in-person trainings with another trained GTL, plus a virtual training with a Food Forward staff member. We ensure that GTLs feel comfortable before leading any event on their own. Staff members are available for support via phone/text during the glean.
Gleans take place outdoors at the farmers market. Gleans go on rain or shine, although GTLs have the discretion to cancel a glean in cases of heavy rain, extreme heat, or unhealthy air quality. GTLs need to lift boxes weighing up to 40 pounds.
