Opportunity Summary 

The CalFresh Assisters support Basic Needs efforts in addressing food insecurity needs on campus via the CalFresh state nutritional assistance program. CalFresh Assisters are responsible for CalFresh eligibility pre-screens, application appointment scheduling, and answering general questions about the program. In addition, CalFresh Assisters support with our marketing efforts in developing social media content, creating flyers, and creating videos. CalFresh Assisters also support in our outreach efforts by representing CalFresh at on-campus tabling events and conducting presentations with faculty, staff, or students. CalFresh Assisters help support in the planning and implementation of annual events such as CalFresh Outreach Week and Hunger and Homlessness Week.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

how to effectively communicate with a diverse student CSULB population, will develop empathy and emotional intelligence skills, to be creative and critical thinkers, to multi-tasks and manage their time, to present in front of small or large groups. Students will learn how to manage a caseload of students, track data, and troubleshoot cases.

Opportunity Training 

Students will received training on Basic Needs, CalFresh, CalFresh Healthy Living, and ASI Pantry. They will learn an overview of each program that runs under Basic Needs with a high focus on the CalFresh process including myths/facts, pre-screening, applications, follow-ups, and data tracking.
