Access to Treatment - Monterey County Behavioral Health

Organization Description

The purpose of the Monterey County Behavioral Health Bureau is to enhance the social, emotional, and spiritual well-being of the residents of Monterey County. The behavioral health bureau provides an array of mental health, wellness, and substance abuse services throughout the county for both children and adults who are Medi-Cal eligible. Specific services include mental health assessments, medication evaluation/support, individual, group, and family therapy, case management, prevention and early intervention services and partnerships with many non-profits to help further the county's mission

Program Information

We offer outpatient services for children, adolescents, and adults who are experiencing psychiatric or substance use problems. When clients call us they will be screened and either have an evaluation or linked directly to service providers. The evaluation will help us better understand their needs. Clients may receive treatment and/or referral to community partners. SWIII and Interns will support in this process guiding clients to appropriate services.

Key Responsibilities:
Mental health linkage to community resources. Understanding new themes and pro-actively engaging in networking with community to identify resources and referrals for clients. Ensuring appropriate and successful linkage was completed.

Desired Intern Characteristics:

Effectively be able to work with all people entering the door. Behavioral Health can help people of all ages. We address issues throughout the lifespan, starting at pregnancy and going through senior years. We work with children, youth, adults, and families.

Special Considerations:

Many clients entering our doors are Spanish speaking. Will need to be able to effectively utilize language line as needed and/or preferred candidate is Spanish speaking.

Interprofessional opportunities available for the student:
Interns will have the opportunity to successfully intern under therapists, supervisors, psychiatric providers, and case managers. Interns will have an immense knowledge of community services and pathways to mental health field in Monterey County.

Trainings appropriate for level of education will be offered including documentation, case management, and client centered work.

Students will actively learn and be experienced in direct client mental health support. Students will navigate community resources and appropriate linkage to mental health services. Students will have the responsibility of supporting youth, adults, and families through transitions in their lives and supporting their mental health.

Health & Safety

Potential risk occurs because services are provided to a community that is under a great deal of stress.  Students are provided with training for de-escalating stress and non-assaultive behavioral management.

Completion of a 12 hour orientation is required for intern placement.
