Environmental Steward VolunteerAt — Solana Center for Environmental Innovation

Opportunity Summary

Volunteers assist our educators with environmental outreach at workshops, school programs, and community events. They get hands-on with our food waste recovery program and worm bin demo sites. More innovative projects are being built all the time to address our communities climate solution needs! At education outreach volunteers handle props and visuals, set up and break down, and field questions from community members. Our educators work closely alongside our volunteers, allowing us to work with people of all experience levels giving them the guidance they need to communicate on these important issues. At hands-on volunteer events volunteers get their hands dirty chopping, shoveling, pouring and mixing green waste to build healthy compost bins that save organics from being sent to the landfill and produce rich soil nutrients to be distributed back to the community.

Desired Qualities:

Interest in sustainability and caring for the planet. Good interpersonal skills are helpful. If you prefer to work with us in schools, Covid-19 vaccination may be required.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes

Keeping our soil healthy and productive is of paramount importance – Composting for healthy soil prevents topsoil erosion, saves energy and prevents pollution, reduces harmful runoff and improves water retention in soil, and creates healthier, stronger plants! Whether you are talking about sustainability or practicing it with us in our compost bins, volunteers will deepen their knowledge of important topics such as composting, waste reduction, and watershed protection from the individual to institutional level. Volunteers will also learn how a local, grass-roots level non-profit organization functions on a day-to-day basis.

Opportunity Training

Training materials can be provided as needed.
