Opportunity Summary 

Students will participate in ecological research and science communication to educate the public about sea otter conservation and sustainable marine recreation practices at Sea Otter Savvy Research and Outreach.

1-2 service learner spots

Requirements:

  • Commitment: Minimum of 2-4 hours per week
  • Availability: Ability to attend occasional weekend or early morning outreach or research activities.
  • Transportation: Reliable transportation to field and outreach sites (Monterey, Moss Landing, etc.).
  • Interest in marine biology, ecology, conservation, or science communication.
  • Strong communication skills—comfortable engaging with the public in outreach settings.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to learn about ethical wildlife viewing guidelines and represent Sea Otter Savvy in the community.
Opportunity Training 

Students will be given training on sea otter behavior, field research protocol and techniques, data processing, science communication, and interpretation of science to the public.

Students log hours with our online platform, SignUp. Supervision is provided by the director, staff, and senior volunteers via email and in-person at Sea Otter Savvy offices and field sites. All volunteers receive weekly emails about the scheduling of shifts and updates to the organization and are provided a login to the volunteer dashboard, The Raft. All volunteers and students have access to a Google Drive resource with educational and organizational materials.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Students will work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
