Opportunity Summary

Here at First Tee, Service Learners will get the opportunity to assist local youth in becoming game changers! Service Learners will assist with golf classes out on the golf course, helping our staff ensure the participants stay safe and have fun. Additionally, Service Learners will assist coaches when participants are in our Taylor Farms Center For Learning participating in a variety of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math activities.

Knowing how to play golf is not required but it is always helpful.

Some of the roles Service Learners will be assisting with will be:

  • Enforcing safety rules
  • Guiding participants to and from activities
  • Role-modeling Professionalism
  • Role-modeling Healthy Habits
  • Creating fun environments
  • Handing out materials
  • Setting up stations
  • Participating in activities when necessary (if comfortable doing so)
  • And much more

Opportunity Training

We will have a safety training and a coaches training, both of which are online. Afterward, we will have an orientation and tour where students will learn a bit more about the organisation. After all of that, we will then have students shadow our coaches to learn how to work with participants. We will then have students begin to participate in activities and help lead them depending on how comfortable they are with doing so.

Staff will meet with students when they arrive to go over the plan for the day and assign them a group or a task. At the end of their shift, staff will follow up with them to see how their day went and if they had any feedback, questions, or concerns. Students are always welcome to call or email as well.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity

We do operate at a golf course, so there is always the possibility of injury by golf club or golf ball; however, if students follow all guidelines and safety policies, the possibility of injury is nearly entirely eliminated.

Opportunity Application Instructions

Interested students need to email:

Janice Mulvey
jmulvey@firstteemontereycounty.org

Janice will then send a volunteer application to be completed asap by the student.

Once selected for this opportunity, they will be sent links to a safety training, background check, and a golf-related training, all of which are online and paid for by First Tee - Monterey County. On completion of these, Janice will then schedule a time with students for an orientation and tour of our campus.
